In this and other questions in our current project, Did You Know Series, we need to let the readers know that your Foster Families Examiner is not an attorney.  Therefore, can only offer you advice based on twelve years of experience in dealing in the Foster Care System, acting as an advocate for hundreds of foster parents.

Inadequate Training
Part 1 ~ Part 2 ~ Part 3 ~ Part 4
Return to Topics Index

The training that is currently offered throughout the nation is very inadequate as preparation for foster parenting. A logical comparison; training by simply reading a book to be a mechanic, book knowledge does not a mechanic make. Just as sitting in a classroom for a few days does not a parent make?

If you are fortunate to have raised your own children successfully, then you are going to have the advantage of experience behind you, however without that experience you are in danger. (Read our article called “Empty Nester’s Vulnerable”). The kind of danger that we speak of is a real and present danger to every foster parent across the country, the storm called allegations.

  • If you have attended/are attending one these trainings think about these questions;

                       1. Did/does your trainer talk about allegations?

                       2. Did you or are you learning learn how to document properly, or even hear the words documentation or journaling?

                       3. Did someone in the audience ask a question about one of these subjects? What was the reaction?

  • You see subject listed above that are vital to your survival as a foster parent and the safety of your family, yet was/has it been (being) covered? Why not?
  • Is the trainer really looking out for those that they are training, or just supplying more foster homes for the children in the Foster Care System to be placed in? Whom are they serving? Where do they obtain the funds for these trainings?

Foster Parents Association have usually applied for/and/or receive grant monies to enable them to cover the cost of the free trainings that you have/are/or will attend (ing).

Your Foster Families Examiner has a theory, please allow me to explain; You see, we believe that you deserve to have the entire picture in front of you prior attempting to put the pieces together. It is futile to spend the time and funds to train a foster parent who will, after the first placement experience, or after an allegation is filed, as well as the realization of what the lack of preparation in documentation has resulted in, they leave the Foster Care System anyway.

  • Here is the Theory; We believe that if we educate you, with reality and truth, not only about the hurricane that will visit you and your family, teach you how to best prepare for that storm called allegations there will still be good people wanting to be foster parents. nfpcar.org

In part one we were telling you about our theory; We believe that if we educate you, with reality and truth there will still be good people wanting to be foster parents. Besides preparation on what is to come would be nice, instead of going in with blinders on, which is what is happening now, you will know what to expect and you will be as prepared as possible.

  • If you asked in one of our workshops the inevitable question that is always asked “would you ever be a foster parent again”, the same answer would be given, “no, not in today’s’ world”. We'll cover why in another article.

 Please understand that your examiner appreciates the efforts and trainings FPA (Foster Parents Associations) offer, they do the best that they can, they just do not extend that training to include reality.

  • People are always sending us grant applications, some if not most of the grant applications that we have received, upon careful examination, have a little known clause, fine print, limit the receivers in what they are able to do for individual foster parents. The grants enable them financially to conduct workshops, trainings and seminars collectively, but their staff cannot assist any individual foster parent.

Did you ever wonder why you were not able to obtain assistance from your Foster Parents Association?

This is the reason, if they do they risk loosing their funding. They have effectively defeated one of the main reasons for their existence, and that is to assist foster parents.

We would like to introduce you to; real support, real training, a real education on what to expect in the world of foster care, a reality check in the darkened world of foster care. The source for truth is nfpcar.org. It doesn't matter whether you are foster/adoptive or biological parent, we will do our best to assist you, everyone needs support, especially after they have had a personal encounter with CPS, if you have lost your children to this nightmare called CPS your about to receive and education on the subject.

If you have had an allegation file on you, ask yourself one question, if you would have had adequate training it would have included how to document properly, maybe your allegation would have been taken care of by your records which often save the day.  Did your training prepare you for this encounter with CPS? Read on......

Our promise to you! Our team will answer your questions, be there to support you, offer you understanding and listen to you. We will do our best to instruct, educate anyone who wants to learn in the workings of CPS. However, do not expect to learn everything you need to know overnight;
"It takes time to be an overnight success";

 Our warning follows; there is more to this picture than the trainings are offering. The reality is that you are going to be experiencing things that you are simply not prepared for.
• The children that they will place in your home have backgrounds that you will not be made aware of.

  •  1.  Emotional/medical behaviors that you will not be informed of.
  •  2. Sexual/physical abuse in their backgrounds.
  •  3. Self mutilations.
  • 4. Fire starters
  • 5. Sexual predators who have a police record
  • 6. Some have been diagnosed  with6.Some have medical/mental disorders like; ADD, ADHD, FAS, PTSD, and the list goes on. Children with any of these disorders are often on medications.

These are just a few items we can list, things you will not be told taught in your training classes. You will not be informed about "allegations", or the importance of documentation. They may mention these things in passing but they do not teach you the proper way to document, or what an allegation will mean to you and your family.

        We urge you to continue your education at nfpcar.org.

We see agencies and the Associations pleading for foster parents, have you seen/heard advertisements s on television, billboards, or on the radio? Instead of allowing foster parents to wake up one day and find themselves in the middle of a hurricane, wondering what to do, who to turn to, or better asking themselves why no one was honest enough to warn them?

We invite you to subscribe to this examiner. If you have a question, please post a comment suggesting any subject and or questions you would like to see an article on. Welcome back to school.
